Bike stolen during shopping trip – successfully recovered thanks to tracker

When Ulrich left the Detmold supermarket on the evening of 26 August 2022, he quickly noticed that his bike was no longer where he had parked and secured it. He reported the theft the very next morning. The IT´S MY BIKE Bike Hunter Team then took up the chase.

They didn’t need to wait long for a GPS signal from the bike. Just three days later, they were able to pick up the precise trail. The stolen item was first located east of Bielefeld, in the town of Lage in the Lippe district. From there, the ride continued to Helpup, 5 km away, via the municipality of Greste until the police eventually swept in and apprehended the thief in Pottenhausen. The owner was very pleased: he retrieved his e-bike and is now able to go shopping again as usual.

Thieves get cold feet: stolen e-bike returned

Petra’s IT’S MY BIKE app first reported unusual movements of her tracked e-bike shortly after midnight on 9 August 2022. Unfortunately, she didn’t read this important message until the next morning but then immediately reported the theft of both bikes.

Working together with the police, our Bike Hunter Team spared no effort in trying to recover the couple’s stolen bikes. On reading the tracker, they were eventually able to see that the thieves first carried both bikes to a nearby playground in a back courtyard and then hid them in one of the surrounding buildings.

Immediately after receiving a push message from the IT’S MY BIKE app at 11:30 a.m., the owner checked his bike’s location and realised his lock hadn’t provided enough protection. His set of wheels were no longer where he parked them at St Ursula Grammar School in the German town of Geilenkirchen. He reported the theft shortly after. The IT’S MY BIKE Hunter Team sprang into action immediately and tracked the thief through the city online thanks to the built-in GPS tracker.

E-bike recovered after over two weeks

Although the owner had forgotten to activate the movement alarm in the GPS tracker’s associated app, she did notice the theft and reported it within minutes. Our Bike Hunter Team contacted the cyclist immediately and traced the bike’s movement from the Neustadt district to the high-rise estate in Silberhöhe in south Halle, where its exact position couldn’t be pinpointed to a single street number at first.

A good two weeks later, the pedelec was on the move again and the Bike Hunter Team was notified of its movement immediately. The IT’S MY BIKE team informed the local police and the officers set off without delay. Even though the signal was not optimal at first, the police persisted and managed to recover the missing pedelec after about two hours of searching in said high-rise estate in the Silberhöhe district. The e-bike was taken to the police station, where the owner was able to collect it the same evening.

E-bike theft: pursuit on motorway

Right after the theft was reported, the owner of the valuable pedelec immediately headed towards the last indicated GPS location with the police. Unfortunately, there was no trace of the bike there. The bike wasn’t moved again until two days later. The transmitted signal became increasingly more precise over an hour and the IT’S MY BIKE Bike Hunter Team notified the local police station once more.

Around 5 p.m., the bike started heading towards the motorway, meaning there were still infinite opportunities for the thieves to get away. Half an hour after entering the motorway, the tracker reported a change in direction towards Duisburg, where the thieves exited. Unfortunately, the police didn’t manage to get to the scene straight away but the tracker continued to transmit a perfect signal.

Berlin: Stolen e-bike recovered within one hour

The pedelec’s owner reported the theft in the GPS tracker’s associated IT’S MY BIKE app at about 3.20 p.m. The IT’S MY BIKE Bike Hunter Team rapidly sprang into action and the victim also alerted the police immediately. Less than half an hour after reporting the crime, the owner took up pursuit with the police. The Bike Hunter Team stayed in contact over the phone the whole time, providing updates on the e-bike’s position. The stolen item moved from the Treptow-Köpenick district and across the River Spree to an apartment building complex. Luckily, the bike was parked in a courtyard and the tracker provided optimum reception.

Everyone is connected
Initially, I found the idea of beginning an internship in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic rather challenging. What with lockdowns, social distancing and working from home, surely it would be really difficult to find my feet in a new company and forge links with colleagues? I was wrong. Right from the start, the team were very open and warm and I felt accepted and valued. My working hours at home and in the office were flexible and I could fit them around my lectures. IoT Venture GmbH’s marketing claim is “Everything is connected”. A variation on this promise – “Everyone is connected” – reflects what working at the company is like. Despite the distances involved, it was relaxed and pleasant the whole time.

On 10 June 2020, Alteos Managing Director Dr Sebastian Sieglerschmidt and Jürgen Veith, CEO of IT’S MY BIKE, held an online training seminar for the bicycle retail trade, explaining how bicycle retailers can extend their sales and service range with Alteos e-bike insurance. They also answered questions such as what an e-bike insurance policy with GPS protection is, how an insurance start-up’s product range differs from that of an established provider and how often stolen e-bikes are found using a GPS tracker. IT’S MY BIKE connects electric bikes to the Internet

Over the past few months, I had the opportunity to learn about a highly dynamic sector which is completely new to me. IoT Venture’s first trade brand is IT’S MY BIKE, a solution which connects e-bikes to the Internet. A GPS tracker is built into the bike where it can’t be seen. This allows owners to find their bike again if it goes missing – when it has been stolen, for example. A digital emergency assistant will be added shortly, which will send help to the accident location if the rider should fall. I assisted my two colleagues in our small marketing and communications team with promoting the brand to the specialist bicycle trade and among end customers and drawing attention to the opportunities that digitisation offers. This is a task that required a great deal of creativity, brainstorming and constant research into different trends and topics.

Background: A woman had her new e-bike stolen while she was attending a hospital appointment in the German city of Neubrandenburg. She had only just bought it the day before and also took out an e-bike insurance policy with GPS protection from the insurance start-up ALTEOS. The best thing about this insurance option is that priority is given to recovering stolen e-bikes. World Bicycle Day on 3 June: cycling is fun, promotes health and helps protect the environment

All IT’S MY BIKE employees are coming to work on their bike today to celebrate World Bicycle Day together. Thirteen out of the total twenty employees make the climate-friendly choice of riding their bike to the office on a daily basis, not just on action days. The others use public transport or drive their conventional or electrically driven cars. IT’S MY BIKE employees cover an average of 813 km per week on their bikes, including leisure activities. The team thus saves almost 5,000 kilograms of greenhouse gases every year. That is equal to almost half of Germany’s annual per capita CO2 emissions.
